Gridlines and unit intervals

Use gridlines sparingly. There should usually be between four and eight gridlines per chart, depending on the size of the chart and the level of data. They should provide enough reference points to read the data values in the chart easily.

Number of gridlines

Do not use too many or too few gridlines.

Example of too many gridlines

A rotated bar chart using too many gridlines, so the labels along the x axis do not line up.

Example of too few gridlines

A rotated bar chart using too few gridlines, so the labels along the x axis are too spread out to be able to tell the value.

Example of correct number of gridlines

A rotated bar chart with evenly spaced gridlines, lining up with the labels on the x axis and allowing the user to clearly see the value.

Gridline intervals

Choose sensible and easy to read and follow gridline intervals.

Example of good gridline intervals

A rotated bar chart with equal gridlines, increasing in intervals of 100.

Example of difficult to follow gridline intervals

A rotated bar chart with gridlines increasing in intervals of 78.

Gridline colour

Gridlines should always be grey: RGB value (190,190,190).

Example of incorrect use of gridline colour

A rotated bar chart with black gridlines crossing the chart both horizontally and vertically.
